One of my favorite seasons has arrived, and with it, scents of pumpkin spice and apple cider and of course a wonderful contest and writing prompt! So, I give you: my 86-word entry for Fall Frenzy and the sweet gathering photo that prompted my STEM (pun intended) acrostic poem. Fingers crossed to win a picture book prize- but I already won a personal prize- the delicious new story I am posting and a few new story ideas! What did you think? I would love to hear from you! Then, pop back over to the Fall Writing Frenzy blog post to check out all the amazing stories. Thank you to Kaitlyn Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis for the contest and lovely inspiration!

SEEDS FROM AUTUMN
By Kari Ann Gonzalez

Prior to pumpkin, Spring magic stirs life in a sleepy little seed.
Under the soil, roots dig deep, and a sprout begins to reach.

More sun. A lot more water. Vines race, play chase, then bide their time, until…
Prickly green greets a golden flower and soon, an emerald globe.
Keep watching. The globe grows burnt marigold, into perfectly pumpkin! Then…
Into the kitchen to bake, mash, spice and sweeten. The aroma, beseeching.
Now, gather to eat! All except seeds saved to conjure next Autumn’s feast.

And, now you’re hungry- am I right? If you need a pumpkin fix check out this allergy friendly pumpkin-spiced donut recipe from Audrey Roberts at Mama Knows Gluten Free.  See photo below-It’s the stuff dreams are made of!

Enjoy, and thanks for stopping by!

I love a good acrostic, and this one goes so smoothly.

Also, how did you know I was looking for a good baked doughnut recipe?

Oh, I hope you like this one. For another topping style instead of frosting- you can crumb coat instead with cinnamon, sugar and crushed rice crispy cereal- also delicious! Thanks for taking a look!

Love your acrostic and how it builds from seed to pie. And thanks for the recipe! I just started making baked donuts and I love pumpkin, so this is great!

Meghan- so glad you caught my intent with the circular-pumpkin story! I wasn't sure if anyone caught that visual layer. Thank you so much for stopping by to take a look, glad you enjoyed it!

You give us such lush, evocative sensory details and description in this lovely lyrical piece, Kari Ann. I especially liked "emerald globe" and "burnt marigold." Not only do you serve up a cornucopia of inventive actions ("vines race, play chase"), but you deliver a complete and satisfying story arc in such a small number of words, thus perfectly encapsulating the theme of your story: from a tiny seed, big things can grow.

Anne, you are so kind! I am so glad you enjoyed it. Contests are fantastic, aren't they? The prompt helped me stir up a little writing magic and invoke all the fabulous fall feelings I wanted on paper. Thank you for stopping by to take a look!

Nicely done, Kari Ann! Some of my favorite lines--Vines race, play chase, then bide their time, until--The globe grows burnt marigold, into perfectly pumpkin!

I love the acrostic poem and how you used the words and imagery. I especially loved the alliteration and how your poem describes the whole process from start to finish. i also enjoyed the ending and how you worked in "conjure." The recipe was an extra bonus!
